COOLER

  • This project was designed in response to a social issue I’m passionate about. I wanted to create awareness about food waste. Food waste has massive environmental consequences. This consists of production waste - the water and energy it took to produce it as well as the creation of greenhouse gases. It is responsible for 7 percent of the world’s emissions. Overproduction, overbuying, unstable markets and poor corporate planning all contribute to food waste. I decided to focus this project on how people have been combating food waste on a local level. One solution I was drawn to was community fridges. Community fridges have been popping up all over NY in an effort to reduce food waste and food insecurity amidst the pandemic.

However, community fridges tend to be unsustainable due to the lack of regulation. My design solution to make the fridges more sustainable is to design an app that helps people locate community fridges near them and offer volunteer opportunities to the community to maintain the fridge. The app would also have inventory so people know what’s in the fridge each week as well as expiration dates. To promote the app I designed an out of home campaign focused on community imagery.

My audience consists of New Yorkers that experience food waste on a regular basis and have witnessed food waste and food insecurity within their local communities. For my research I surveyed people from all five boroughs of New York to align my design solution to their needs.
